Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month

October is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month. On October 15th, now called Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day (PAILRD), at 7:00 pm in all time zones, families around the world will light candles (and leave the candle burning for at least an hour) in memory all of the precious babies who have been lost during pregnancy or in infancy.

If you know someone who has experienced pregnancy or infant loss, it's essential to offer your support and empathy. Here are some ways you can do that:

  1. Listen Without Judgment: Grieving individuals often need someone to listen to their feelings without judgment or advice. Offer a compassionate ear and let them express their emotions freely. Avoid platitudes such as: “God gained an angel” or “You’ll have another baby.” These sentiments while well meaning can be very hurtful.

  2. Respect Their Grief Journey: Everyone grieves differently, and there is no timeline for healing. Respect the grieving person's unique process and don't rush them through it.

  3. Remember Their Baby: Don't be afraid to mention the baby's name and acknowledge their existence. Many parents find solace in knowing that their child is remembered.
